How do I know how old my wiring is?

Firstly, we would say that you should not disassemble electrical wiring points yourself if you are not competent but there are a few things to look out for - these can be especially useful when looking to buy a property.

• Rewireable fuse board: if the fuse board only has one switch and has a row of cartridges, this is a good indication your wiring is a few decades old.
• Black rubber cable: this cable often becomes brittle over time and by now any still being used should be replaced at the earliest opportunity. This cable type typically dates to the 1950s, you may be able to see wires entering the consumer unit.
• Unearthed lights: sometimes you will see a warning sticker on a consumer unit/fuse board that warns of an unearthed lighting circuit. This will normally indicate the wiring is dated to the mid-1960s or earlier.

Do I need to rewire the whole property at once?

No! It is common to rewire parts of a house as required, such as lights or even a kitchen.

We would often advise if you are spending a significant amount of money on a kitchen, it can be unwise to do so with old or poor condition wiring underneath. A kitchen rewire typically costs between £1,000.00 and £2,000.00 plus VAT, it can also be a good opportunity to add extra features such as underfloor heating, plinth heaters, undercounter or under plinth lighting.
