What is PAT (Portable Appliance Testing)

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing, commonly referred to as PAT Testing.

PAT Testing is comprised of both inspections and testing elements. It is the best way of ensuring electrical equipment is safe for continued use, does not pose a fire risk and is not going to hurt anyone. In short, PAT Testing is how we prevent accidents in the workplace which arise from damaged and deteriorated appliances, leads and extension leads.

How Frequently should I PAT Test?

There is no hard and fast rule, frequency should be based on an assessment of risk.

The Health and Safety Executive offer guidance in a document titled Maintaining Portable Electrical Equipment, however varying types of equipment can require different frequencies of testing. This can be further complicated by differing risk levels for different tasks or areas of the work premises.

It is for these reasons a regular comprehensive test can be helpful in ensuring compliance, such as on an annual basis. We would be happy to discuss your testing regime with you to establish the correct test frequency for your business.

Who should carry out PAT Testing?

There is no specific requirement however the person carrying out the test must be competent to do it. The person will need:

  • the right test equipment.
  • the ability/skills to use this test equipment properly.
  • the knowledge to interpret the test results.

Whilst not a requirement we find many benefits to using a qualified Electrical Contractor such as SG Electrics to carry out your PAT Test. Such as being able to carry out repairs on site, a greater depth of understanding of test results, the ability to rule out issues with electrical points. It is common for our customers to combine PAT Testing with Electrical Tests such as EICR’s or other Electrical Installation works which can make the PAT Testing more cost effective.
