What is PIV (positive input ventilation) & how does it work?

Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) is a whole house air ventilation system that works by drawing in fresh, filtered air into a property from outside. These can be either installed in a loft space or on a wall in a flat or apartment.

PIV works by gently introducing fresh, filtered air into the dwelling. Air is drawn into the unit and is passed through filters before being pushed around the home – as the air moves, it creates a pressure as it dilutes, displaces and eventually replaces the stale air in the home.

As air is constantly moving, humid air cannot settle on cold surfaces, such as windows or outer walls, meaning it cannot condensate. Eventually, this humid air is forced through natural leakage points throughout the home – such as windows, under doors or even through keyholes. Positive Input Ventilation has become the UK’s most popular method of low-energy, whole-home ventilation, and is now installed in over 1 million homes in the UK.

How Much Does It Cost to Run a PIV Unit?

A study from the Local Authority Building and Maintenance (LABM) found; ‘On average a PIV unit will consume 5 watts of power which will cost just 1p a day to run. As a result, PIV systems have long been considered one of the most affordable ways to provide whole-home ventilation.’ Even a heated PIV unit offers great value for money. LABM states that ‘heated systems typically consume 500 watts of with running costs being no more than £1 a day when the heater is enabled.’

A non-heated PIV unit would cost roughly £36 a year in electricity. This makes a PIV unit extremely cost-effective. It would be cheaper to run a PIV unit than almost any dehumidifier!
